First, let me start by stating I'm aware Audi made changes to the climate control several times throughout the B5. There are, from what I've been
able to figure, roughly 4 (maybe 5) different versions of the system:
v1 - Early 1996
v2 - 1997 (possibly some late 1996s)
v3 - 1998
v4 - 1999
v5 - sometime possibly in late 1999 or 2000
The biggest changes seem to have happened between v2 and v3 as the 1998 system is very close to the facelift 1999. I know Audi eventually changed the
AC Evap hard lines after v3 (1998), but I'm not sure if this was done in 1999 or in 2000.
In terms of illumination of the climate control I'm not sure what you mean by the illumination signal also coming from the first plug (not sure if
you mean Connector A, Pin 1 or if you mean somewhere on Connector D as it's the first one on the left). Either way, here's the deal with the
illumination... there are two illumination signals:
1. *Terminal 58 (switched B+ from light switch, sends power for illumination)
*sometimes listed as 58a or 58b
2. Terminal 58d (dimming illumination, allows for the illumination to brighten or dim and is controlled by the knob on the instrument cluster)
For the 1997 climate control you have the following...
Connector A, Pin 5 - Grey/Blue Wire - Terminal 58d (dimming illumination from instrument cluster)
Connector C, Pin 7 - Grey/Green Wire - Terminal 58a (illumination switched B+ from light switch)
For 1998 these changed to...
Connector A, Pin 5 - Grey/Blue Wire - Terminal 58b (illumination switched B+ from light switch)
Connector C, Pin 7 - Grey/Blue Wire - Terminal 58d (dimming illumination from instrument cluster)
And finally for 1999+ these changed to...
Connector A, Pin 5 - Grey/Blue Wire - Terminal 58b (illumination switched B+ from light switch)
Connector A, Pin 6 - Grey/Green - Terminal 58s (illumination switched B+ from light switch)
Connector C, Pin 7 - Grey/Blue Wire - Terminal 58d (dimming illumination from instrument cluster)
So, what you need to do should be the following...
1. Swap the wires from Connector A, Pin 5 and Connector C, Pin 7
2. Add a wire to Connector A, Pin 6 from a Terminal 58 (switched B+) source
This should hopefully correct the illumination issue. Let me know if this works or if you continue to have problems.
Thanks,
Drew
